The American Short-hair, not to be confused with the Domestic or British Short-hair, is a cat of medium size and surprising power. This cat is muscular, heavily boned and has a thick, rounded appearance. This breed is a working cat and is therefore hardy, agile and makes an exceptional hunter. Like many working cats, the American Short-hair is highly energetic. The short coat is quite thin during the warmer months and rather thick during the winter months to keep the cat going no matter what the weather is like.
The American Short-hair is highly intelligent and hardy. It can be trained to a certain degree, however, like most cats, it will always retain a sense of independence that will result in stubborn-like behaviour from time to time. This cat loves its family and has a very even-tempered demeanour. It does not demand attention from its owners but does love to play. If socialized, the American Short-hair will bond well with children and other animals.
Build (Male / Female)
Male: 12 pounds (5-6kg)
Female: 8-12 pounds (3-6kg)
A long lived cat, this hardy breed can live up to 15 or 18 years.
6 kittens is the average number of kittens in a litter.
The coat of the American Short-hair needs daily brushing despite its short length. This is especially the case when the change of seasons is occurring and the coat is thickening or thinning. Brushing and combing will help get rid of knots and discourage hairballs.
