Calico is a type of coat coloring that is found mostly on female cats. Cats of the Calico color are mottled with patches of orange, cream, chocolate, black or blue. Tortoiseshell cats, sometimes shortened to Torties, along with Calico, are not specific breeds of cat as they are sometimes mistaken to be. The markings and colors of the Calico breed are found on many different pure-breeds and mixed-breed cats. They are also found on cats that do not belong to a recognized breed. In the United States, cats that are largely white and red with brown patches are described as Calico cats.
